Groundbreaking Clinic Celebrates Big Year
Lisa Zeleny was done crying. She had twins babies to raise, and if one was just diagnosed with Down syndrome, she was determined to do her best by both her girls, Grace and Katie.

Zeleny, an attorney, is gratified to know that her daughter Grace has benefited from the best and most extensive medical care available, thanks to Rady Children’s innovative Down Syndrome Clinic, run by Dr. Lynne Bird.

The clinic has officially celebrated its first birthday. It is the only one of its kind in the region, and brings together all the medical specialties in one office suite on a monthly basis so already struggling families can get the most comprehensive care without racing all over town — and possibly not getting all the care they need. Some 165 patients and families were seen.

“It’s a nicely choreographed dance, our life is, thanks to the help we get here,” said Zeleny, clapping in happy encouragement as her toddler proudly shouted one of her newest words.

For its first birthday Lisa Mersereau of DS Action, an advocacy group that has raised the funding to help run the monthly clinic, awarded Dr. Bird and the staff a commemorative plaque with words of praise carved into it: Perseverance. Passion. Skill.

“I’m so proud of our staff for making such an impact,” said Dr. Bird, a geneticist. “It has been a success. We’ve prevented more children from falling through the cracks.”

Pediatric News
RCHSD Genetics department is currently taking appointments for the Down Syndrome Center at (858) 966-5840. Currently the Down Syndrome Center is scheduling children birth through 5 years, but a wait list has been started for children over 5 years old. DS Action and Rady Children's Hospital want to give the parents an opportunity to have their newborns seen at the center first, but the center will be open to children up through 18 years old in the future. If you have not already done so, please call the center to make an appointment or to put your child on the wait list, as spots are filling up quickly. Thank you for your continued patience and support.
